This mostly applies to the Anime but I'm not actually a big fan of the first Goku vs Vegeta fight. The actual fight between Goku and base Vegeta lasts about 15 minutes, with most of that just being screaming. I know screaming happens in every fight but it seems worse here due to the fact we have Goku using Kaioken so much, screaming each time. Most fights have 2 power up scenes, one for each character, but this one had multiple for Goku.

The fighting itself seems slow most of the time, and 90% of the blows lack any real power or speed. Seriously at times it looks like they were just tickling each other, and I half expect them to do that "slappy fight" cartoons do for humour. When one of them gets hit by the other they just float through the air like paper. Most of the fight wasn't even, with one of the fighters clearly being in control at any one time.
The fighting wasn't slow at all, maybe it was compared to future fights where guys are throwing kicks and punches so fast that the animators are literally putting them in a loop. It's literally the same super fast punches and kicks that they show for about 5 to 10 seconds for each angle. In the first Goku and Vegeta fight the fact that they are slower is what made it better because it didn't have this flaw. You can actually see almost every strike and move that they make, but the animation was done as fast as possible but still slow enough so that the viewer can see everything. That to me is far more exciting to watch. For example at one point during Goku's Kaioken he hits Vegeta with a few punches then Vegeta blocks a couple, Goku flies a hundred feet away from him and all of a sudden reappears behind Vegeta and kicks him in the back. All of this in a matter of seconds. It's really the best fight in anime history IMO.

That's all fine and dandy if you like it. I just find the animation too slow, weak and awkward personally to consider it anywhere near one of the best fights in the series.

Yeah but do you really want guys with power levels around 20-30k to be as fast and destructive as the guys in the last couple of saga's of the series? The fact that you find the fight to look slow and weak should be a fitting aspects for your viewing experience especially considering the time and circumstances of the fight.

But it's only really this fight. I never seem to have an issue with the speed of fights like Goku vs Nappa, or Goku and Piccolo vs Raditz. Though to be honest speed wasn't my main issue, the lack of power was. Very few hits seemed to have any kind of impact, the only exception being when Goku turned Kaioken x3.

I disagree with that, especially the bodyshots looked painful to me.

Overrated

SSJ2 Goku vs Majin Vegeta (anime version) - I don't see what was so great about it. It's good but it wasn't anything we haven't seen before in the series (a bunch of fast flurry of punches and kicks with ki attacks and strong exchange of blows thrown in for extra measures) . Given Goku's creativity along with Vegeta's technicality and ki manipulation, they could have choreographed something better.

Underrated

Piccolo vs #17 - For the longest time it's been my 2nd favorite fight (first being Goku vs. Vegeta) as it's one of the even in the series. In one corner we have an expert technician with exceptional ki manipulation and projectile ability and another is a speedy one who is weaker (not by too much though) but with infinite energy. It was also the last major fight Piccolo ever had before even he was to be eclipsed eventually by the Saiyans and he goes off with a bang.

Underrated - Goku vs Jackie Chun in the 21 budokai. It very well could be my favorite fight. Very fast paced - a quality most DB/Z fights lack - and was also a thriller its momentum swings.

Then there is Goku vs Freeza. Sure it is well known, but it is not seen favorably among many hardcore fans as it is deemed too slow paced and drawn out. I prefer the fast paced battles like the one mentioned above, but this battle was drawn out intentionally. It's not a battle but a whole war in one fight. People can still dislike the pace, but I can see why it is the way it is, and I think it is underrated.
Also underrated: Goku vs Tien 22nd Budokai, Goku vs Piccolo 23rd budokai, Vegeta vs Dodoria (maybe not so much, but I love the finishing move)

Overrated - I can't say I feel any are. I don't think Vegeta vs Goku part 2 was great in combat, but that's not what it was about. It was about Son fraking Goku vs Prince freaking Vegeta. That right there makes it worth its praise. ... I guess I'd go with Goku vs Cell. At leat in Kai, I can point out many re-used frames. It happens every fight, but I notice it more in this one and Cell blowing up the touranment, and my hopes of any return to the budokais, wasn't cool. The actual fighting was great though.
